Teaching and Sheet Music

Over three decades Rachel taught people to play pan in a huge variety of environments from complete beginners to conservatoire-level players, from age seven to adult.

She taught steel bands in the London Borough of Barnet from 1996 – 2007, taking groups to the National Finals of Music For Youth on numerous occasions; the Dollis Deep Pans won a Highly Commended Certificate there in 2006. They also performed at the Festival Hall (Youth Makes Music 2003) the Albert Hall (Barnet Live 2005) and toured Slovenia (1999) as guests of the British Ambassador.

As Surrey Steel Band Co-ordinator she taught county-wide in half a dozen schools, and organised a fifty piece County Steel Orchestra which performed at the Woking Pops Concert (1999) and at the Albert Hall Gala Concert (1998). She has worked with excluded young people at South East Surrey Pupil Referral Unit and taught the award-winning Reigate Pilgrim Steel Bands for 19 years during which time they were were invited to play at The Primary Proms at the Royal Albert Hall (2016).

After a period of serious illness Rachel has recently returned to teaching and has been appointed steel band tutor at Christ’s Hospital School, Horsham.
